Lambeth’s Lib Dem parking scam has thrown up another example of unfair ticketing – this time wardens have handed out 6 tickets for just one parking offence. John Newton of Tulse Hill made the mistake of parking his van with one wheel on the kerb of Leander Road.

The first Mr Newton knew of his parking offence was when a letter arrived on his doorstep telling him he had a fine to pay. Accepting his van had been parked with one wheel on the kerb he decided to pay the £100 fine. But then another fine arrived…and another…and another, until he had a total of 6 parking fines.

Mr Newton insists that no penalty charge notices were attached to the van over the several days it was parked.

This further example of over-zealous ticketing will add weight to Labour Councillors’ calls for the removal of financial incentives to the parking contractor to hand out tickets. More than 700 people living in Controlled Parking Zones have now written to their Labour Councillors backing the campaign.

Cllr Jackie Meldrum, Mr Newton’s ward Councillor said:

“Liberal Democrats are running Lambeth’s parking service to make money out of car drivers, They should be enforcing parking rules fairly, but as this case shows, parking is just being used as a cash cow.”

“Since they signed their contract in 2003, the Lib Dems have arrogantly ignored calls from the local press, local car drivers and Labour Councillors to renegotiate the contract. People like Mr Newton are really angry and rightly so.”
