Lib Dem parking scam exposed

Lambeth's Tory and Liberal Democrat bosses are giving parking wardens cash bonuses for handing out extra parking fines. They secretly agreed to give their private parking contractor extra profits for issuing more than 200,000 parking tickets a year - regardless of how many offences are actually committed. This is the equivalent of more than one £40 parking fine a year for every adult living in the Borough. The number of parking fines handed out by wardens has soared since the Council introduced the new scheme towards the end of last year. But many of those ticketed had not committed any offence at all, and there are fears that wardens are simply handing out tickets to meet the Lib Dems' targets.

Lambeth parking enforcementThe Council has been flooded with complaints from angry motorists ever since the new contract was signed. When officers from the Liberal-led council were asked whether the new contract included financial incentives they denied it. But the local press exposed the truth and shame-faced Liberal councillors have been forced to admit the truth. The Liberal Democrats and their Tory allies now stand accused of covering up their plans to use parking fines as a way of raising extra money from local residents.

Labour believes that parking fines should not be handed out to drivers who park legally. Labour's Cllr Peter O'Connell is demanding immediate action. 'This contract is a disgrace and it should be ripped up. Imagine if the police said they were going to arrest 200,000 people for burglary - regardless of how many burglaries were actually committed! That's the logic behind this latest piece of madness from Lambeth's right-wing Tory-Liberal Council.'
