Lambeth Liberal Democrat / Conservative council
slammed over parking tickets
|
Lambeth’s record on parking appeals is the second worst in London according to newly released figures from the Association of London Government. Of over 3000 appeals against parking tickets in Lambeth in 2004-05 an incredible 76% were found to be wrongly issued.
The figures demonstrate the crisis at the heart of Lambeth’s parking enforcement regime caused by a parking contract signed in August 2003. The contract, signed by ruling Liberal Democrat and Conservative Councillors, contains financial incentives for a private company to meet arbitrary ticketing targets. Wardens are expected to issue 12 tickets for every 8 hour shift.
Last year Lambeth parking wardens issued over 300,000 tickets to residents, more than 3000 of these were appealed against. However if you appeal in Lambeth you are more likely to succeed than in all but two other London Boroughs.
Councillor Pete Bowyer, the Labour opposition spokesperson on fair parking commented:
“Lambeth Labour has have consistently called for parking enforcement to concentrate on safety and the free flow of traffic, but the Liberals and Tories just want to make money out of car drivers by issuing as many tickets as possible.”
“These figures are yet further evidence
that the quality of tickets issued in Lambeth is extremely poor. This
is a direct result of the unfair financial incentives in Lambeth’s
parking contract.”
