Lib Dem “bribe” e-mail denounced by Labour
Lambeth’s opposition Labour Councillors have denounced e-mails sent by Liberal Councillors in which one describes planning agreements as a “bribe” and another proposes how to deny a local MP credit for a campaign from a local resident. The e-mail, which was inadvertently sent to a Labour Councillor, exposes rank opportunism amongst Liberal Councillors in Lambeth. Click here for the full email. In the exchange of e-mails Darren Sanders states that “It may also be prudent to look at any potential planning applications in the Vale and see if S106 (planning gain/bribes) is useful.” In response, Steve Reed, the Leader of Lambeth Labour Group has written to Liberal Leader of the Council calling for a review of all Section 106 planning applications since May 2002 when the Tory-Liberal alliance took over the Council. Another Liberal Councillor, Angie Meader, also wrote in the e-mails that Lib Dems should try to stop any credit being given to hard working local MP Keith Hill for a possible increase in the provision of GPs in Streatham. Councillor Meader writes that any credit for Keith Hill would “Not really [be] in the spirit of bringing Streatham South residents, particularly the Asian community, into the [Lib Dem] fold!” Councillor Meader is also exposed for using her position as Health Scrutiny Chair for party political purposes. She forwards an e-mail from a local GP and asks her Lib Dem councillors “not to advertise that I am sharing all other people's emails with lib-dem colleagues.” Streatham South Councillor John Kazantzis commented: Darren Sanders is unfit to continue as the Council’s crime chief.”
“I’m disgusted but not entirely
surprised by the Liberal Democrats shameless statements in these e-mails.
They don’t care one bit about access to health services for people
in Streatham. They have exposed themselves as naked opportunists and they
should resign.”
