Invest in youth sports for the next Danny Williams
Lambeth’s Labour Councillors are calling for extra investment in kids sport in the borough, to help bring through the sporting hero’s of the future. The pride of Brixton, Danny Williams, has returned home from beating Mike Tyson as a positive role model for Lambeth’s kids. But children in Lambeth currently struggle to find adequate training and facilities due to a lack of investment by the Council. “Sport for Lambeth”, the borough’s main voluntary body running sporting events and training for kids receives just £45, 000 a year from the council, meaning volunteers often have to dig into their own pockets to provide sports activities for children. Lambeth’s Lib Dem/Tory Executive recently handed out £16 million of Government windfall money and didn’t even consider Sport for Lambeth for any funding. On their small budget the group organise a multitude of events for kids to practice their skills in Karate, football, athletics, basketball and many other sports. Labour Councillor and lead Environment Spokesperson Cllr Tim Sargeant commented: “Sport for Lambeth do an invaluable job in providing sporting activities for kids in Lambeth. Parents with children on holiday from school will know how little there is for kids to do in the borough. I think its time to boost the funding for Sport for Lambeth” “Sport for Lambeth volunteers really enjoy
their work with local children, but there are huge limits on their time
and resources. The council needs to realise that you can’t get something
for nothing and start investing in children’s sport in Lambeth.
