Labour wins Streatham South by-election
Labour’s Mark Bennett has won the Streatham South by-election. Mark campaigned on a positive action plan to sort out many problems that the Lib Dem-run council has failed to tackle over recent years, including improvements to roads and pavements, action on crime, and more investment in local schools. Labour’s share of the vote went up dramatically from 41% to 49%, while the Lib Dems failed to make the inroads they were hoping for. The Lib Dems were criticised for launching a series of bitter personal attacks on Labour’s candidate, and for making unfounded attacks on the record of the popular former Labour councillor Tim Sargeant who died of cancer aged just 44. After being declared the winner on Thursday night, Mark was already hard at work by Friday morning. He joined residents on a site-visit to review a local planning proposal. Mark commented: “I’m deeply honoured that the residents of Streatham South have put their trust in me. I look forward to helping improve life for everyone who lives in our area. Tim Sargeant will be a hard act to follow, but I will do my best to honour Tim’s memory by carrying on his hard work.” Streatham South by-election results:
