Fortune wasted on bureaucrats palace

Phoenix House, Lambeths new multi-million pound offices
Lambeth’s Lib Dem-Tory controlled council have spent over £700,000 on comfy chairs

Lambeth’s Lib Dem-Tory controlled council have spent over £700,000 of tax payers money on comfy chairs and luxury fittings in Phoenix House. They have already splashed out £26 million to purchase the luxury riverside offices in face of protests by residents and Labour Councillors.

For Lambeth residents who have had their Council Tax increased by 35% since the Lib Dems came to power, the £700, 000 bill will be another slap in the face. Despite the huge increases in tax services have failed to improve. Lambeth has not moved up one single place in the league table of London Councils. The ease with which the money was found will also shock parents living in the centre of the borough who have been waiting three years for the council to name sites for new secondary schools.

The awesome £727,837 figure for the Phoenix House fit out project was agreed by the Lib Dems in the 2005 budget.

Leader of the Labour Group, Cllr Steve Reed commented,

“The Lib Dem-Tory Council has now shown us what their priorities are. Feathering the nests of council officers rather than dealing with the issues which really matter to Lambeth residents.

“Secondary school places, fighting crime and investing in services for the vulnerable should be top of the council’s agenda, but instead they continue to boost their reputation for wistfulness and incompetence.”
