Lambeth Council wastes £26 Million on luxury offices

£26 million luxury offices

Lib Dem and Tory councillors have wasted a staggering £26 million of council taxpayers' money buying themselves a luxury riverside office block.
Phoenix House, which will give bureaucrats luxury accommodation with riverside views, will provide no direct benefit to Lambeth's residents.

The Lib Dems and Tories have paid for their extravagance with record-breaking tax hikes. Over four years, the average Lambeth household has been stung with a £1000 increase in council tax. But while they are taking money off hard-pressed residents to pay for smart new offices, the Lib Dems and Tories are refusing to invest in services. Their record speaks for itself:

1. A day care centre for the elderly has been closed down 2. Services for council tenants have been cut back 3. Hundreds of children have been left without a school place as the council refuses to build new schools 4. Swimming pools across Lambeth are threatened with permanent closure 5. Desperately needed improvements to street lighting have been cancelled

To add insult to injury, the Lib Dems
and Tories recently admitted they are kitting out their new offices with luxury furnishings - costing a further £700,000.

Councillor Steve Reed, Leader of the Labour Party on Lambeth Council commented:

"The Lib Dems and Tories have made people pay an extra £1000 in council tax. And now we find out they're spending it all on luxury office blocks and plush new furniture. Meanwhile, services are getting worse or facing cut-backs. It's simply not right to waste people's money in this way"
