Lambeth CCTV can’t take the heat

CCTV cameras in Lambeth - breaking down
CCTV cameras in Lambeth - breaking down

Closed Circuit cameras managed by Liberal Democrat / Conservative joint run Lambeth council are breaking down because they cannot take sudden rises or drops in temperature. The stunning admission came from council officers concerned about the number of cameras which were not working in the borough.

In the recently published May 2005 “Council Performance Digest” a Lambeth Manager was forced to explain why the number of cameras in operation had dropped. Her explanation was that “they are hampered by sudden rise or drops in temperature, which can effect the control boxes leading them to overheat or freeze.”

CCTV has become a crucial weapon in the fight against crime, reducing incidents in crime hotspots and providing police with vital evidence when crime does take place. Surveys show that crime is the greatest concern for Lambeth’s residents. The bizarre admission that CCTV is not working under normal weather conditions will perplex residents and police those who value the crime prevention of functioning CCTV cameras.

Councillor Peter O’Connell, Lambeth Labour’s Spokesperson Against Crime said:

“The Lib Dems would have us believe that dozens of CCTV cameras are not working under normal highs and lows of British weather. The truth is that they are just going slow in fixing them. These cameras are a vital tool for the police for gathering evidence, but once again the Liberals are failing to support them properly”

“I’ve heard of leaves on the line and even the wrong kind of snow, but this yet another ridiculous excuse. The Lib Dems appear to be so soft on crime that they’re even prepared to blame the weather for their failure.”
