Home threat for Lambeth heroes
Lambeth’s Liberal-Tory administration has been accused of rank hypocrisy this week over the treatment of war heroes living in Clapham. The Council has unfurled a banner on the front of Lambeth Town Hall in Brixton declaring “Lambeth salutes those who gave us victory in World War II.” But despite their claims to be “saluting” war heroes, the Lib Dems and Tories are still threatening to demolish the homes of a number of World War II veterans living in Clifton House on Clarence Avenue sheltered housing. Earlier this year the elderly residents of Clifton House were shocked to hear their homes were under threat when Lib Dem “Focus” leaflets were stuffed through their doors telling them their homes were “empty”. The residents are understandably outraged and have vowed to fight demolition alongside local Labours councillors. The council is currently refusing to remove the threat of demolition despite their scrapping of plans to redevelop Glenbrook Primary school based opposite to Clifton House Ruth Ling, Local Labour Councillor for Clapham Common, said: “What rank hypocrisy, how can they claim to be saluting our war heroes when they are threatening to throw them out of their homes? “This is no way to reward them for what they have done for this country.”
