Labour Councillors are calling on Lambeth residents to make sure they are registered to vote. Many Labour observers at polling stations during the General Election were struck by the number of people arriving to vote but who were unable to do so. A number of people were unable to cast their ballot because they had not registered to vote with the local council.

Labour Councillors want as many people as possible to be able to vote as possible. Local Council Elections in May 2006 will be a chance for all Lambeth residents to give their verdict on the current Liberal Democrat/Conservative Coalition. Reports from polling stations last Thursday show that many people think they will be able to vote without having registered.

Lambeth Council keeps the electoral roll, but it is up to every adult to register by filling in a simple form and sending it back to the council. When a person moves house they should also let their council know.

Each September the Council asks every household to re-register the adults on the electoral roll by sending out a form. Its important to complete and return that form too. Registering to vote is not automatic, it is something that has to be done every year and every time you move home

In Lambeth the number to contact to check if you are on the electoral register is 020 7926 2144.

Labour Councillor Donatus Anyanwu said:

“If your not registered to vote, you don’t have a voice. The process of registering is simple and painless. I found it quite upsetting to see people being turned away at the polls last week.”

“We are told that there is a lot of apathy about politics, but I know most Lambeth residents take their right to vote very seriously. I would urge anyone in Lambeth who is unsure about their electoral status to contact the council straight away to get it sorted.”
