Streatham South Labour Councillors - Mark Bennett,
John Kazantzis and David Malley - are going out and about explaining new
laws to all shopkeepers who sell alcohol in south Streatham and Streatham
Vale.
New legislation means that shop staff who sell alcohol to under-18s will
face £80 fixed penalty notices, and licensees will face a £5,000
fine upon conviction. Licences could be suspended, altered or revoked.
Cllr Mark Bennett said,
"This is about responsibility. New penalties are now in force for shopkeepers who sell alcohol to kids. Parents must take note too - kids who attempt to buy alcohol are also breaking the law and face £50 fixed penalty notices and a fine of up to £1,000 on conviction."
"John, David and I have been explaining the
new rules to local traders in our area. Our message to retailers and licensees
across South London is clear - get your house in order and stop selling
alcohol to kids under 18."
Shev Patel, manager of Streatham Vale's Wine Leaf off licence, said:
"I think it's right that traders who knowingly break the law should
take responsibility for their actions and be fined or prosecuted. It's
helpful when councillors like Mark, John and David take the time to keep
us up to date about changes in the law."
