Residents
and shopkeepers fight to Save Shops in Streatham
June 2005 - For an up-date on this story please come here
Residents and shop owners in Streatham are furious
that the Lib Dems are forcing through plans that could see local shops
closed down and boarded up. The Lib Dems are working with the Tories to
sell off the shop leases to private investors who will hike up rents and
kill off the shops.
Shops under threat include a pet shop, a chemists,
a dry-cleaners, a launderette, an off-licence, a grocery store, a double
glazing shop, a charity shop, an antique furniture shop, an Indian restaurant,
a café-bar, a barbers shop, a nail parlour, and a newsagent.
But residents and traders are fighting back against
the Lib Dems. Backed by Keith Hill MP they’ve launched a ‘Save
Our Shops’ campaign. Supporters have been putting up bright yellow
posters all over Streatham Hill – some of them are pictured below.
