We want a Brix-stone!

Councillor Steve Reed is backing Brixton Hill residents who want to re-erect Brixy's Stone - the ancient standing stone from which Brixton gets its name. Historians believe that Brixy's Stone - named after a Saxon tribal chieftain - once stood near the top of Brixton Hill.

It was the meeting place of the Brixton Hundred, an early form of council attended by the hundred most important families in an area that stretched out for many miles. Now a group of residents want to commemorate Brixton's long-distant past by setting up a new standing stone at the junction of Morrish Road and Brixton Hill - near where the original Brixy's Stone may once have stood.

Brixton Hill councillor Steve Reed is working with local resident Charmian Kenner and other members of the Sulina and Morrish Roads Residents Association to try and win funding for the project.

Councillor Steve Reed said:

"Few people realise that the original Brixton was at the top of Brixton Hill, not where the town centre is currently situated. I love the idea of re-erecting Brixy's Stone in Brixton Hill. A sense of history can help build people's pride in their area."

Charmian Kenner, chair of the Sulina and Morrish Roads Residents Association, said:

"It would be great to have a landmark for Brixton Hill, something that expresses our pride in the present as well as reminding us of Brixton's past."

Charmian and Steve are keen to hear from individuals or groups who would like to support the project. Steve can be contacted on 020 7926 1166 or by email at sreed@lambeth.gov.uk.
