The Labour Party in Lambeth has called for Liberal Democrat controlled council to apply for new Government anti litter cash. London councils are being given the chance to be part of a new national campaign to tackle litter and chewing gum next year following the success of three Defra-backed campaigns.
Funding will be available for at least a further 12 medium sized, high-profile advertising campaigns, all geared to reducing the problem of gum litter in a set area. The form and guidance has been sent to all local authorities and the closing date for applications is February 3rd 2006.
Lambeth Liberal Democrats have been notoriously poor at claiming money on offer from central Government to invest in the borough. They recently turned down £25 million of Government investment for a new secondary school in Brixton
Labour Councillor Donatus Anyanwu, said,
"Chewing gum is extremely difficult, time-consuming and expensive to remove and it is a real problem in across Lambeth. That's why the Government is providing funds and new powers for the council to clean up the borough.”
"The Lib Dem controlled council has a poor record of working with the Government. I hope they will claim this money which will help deal with a problem that I know concerns many residents.”
