Corporate flyposting tolerated in Lambeth
Lambeth Council is failing to use new powers granted to Local Authorities to stop fly-posting in the borough. The Liberal/Tory controlled council recently admitted that it had not served any anti-social behaviour orders against companies illegally putting up posters, despite recent success in other parts of London to deal with the problem through Anti-Social Behaviour Orders. Camden Council recently issued ASBO notices on the four directors of a company called Diabolical Liberties, a “guerrilla advertising” outfit acting on behalf of a number of major companies. This follows a previous successful action against Sony Music which has seen a dramatic reduction in the number of illegal posters in the borough. Co-incidentally, it is the same Diabolical Liberties who are the main culprits for fly posting in Lambeth, and yet the Liberal Executive is refusing to take decisive action. Like Camden, Lambeth has become a target for fly-posting. Brixton, Stockwell, Streatham and Clapham have suffered most in recent years. Cllr Tim Sargeant, Labour’s Environment Spokesperson commented: “If Camden can do it, why can’t Lambeth? We have been plagued by fly-posting in this borough for decades and now we finally have the powers to deal with the problem. “These companies make millions every year
through illegal advertising and its Lambeth residents who pick up the
cleaning bill. The Liberal's and Tories should use the powers available
to them, rather than making excuses.”
