Labour leads energy efficiency drive

Malcolm Wicks MP, Government Minister for Energy, today visited a flagship project in Lambeth, leading the way in the promotion of energy efficient housing.

Boatemah Walk has a key urban design role to play in changing the image of the estate and reflects the commitment of Lambeth’s Housing Department to promote sustainable design and construction. In addition to the solar PV roof, other features include 17 new timber frame homes a water harvesting system to help reduce water stress, low energy design, as well as a high level of sustainable and recycled materials.

The Minister was shown around the site this morning with members of Solacentury, the team of solar engineers involved in the project, residents from the local community and members of the Housing Department. Also present were journalists and local Labour Councillors. The party were shown the solar panels and the generators measuring output in each building. They were also given an understanding of how energy efficient insulation really makes a difference in combating fuel poverty and climate change.

Cllr Donatus Anyanwu said;
“Myself and Dora Boatemah began this project in 1999 and it so fantastic to actually see the results of our hard work. The project shows that the local Community and the Council can really work together to improve where we live and the way we live for the good of the whole community and the planet.”
