Ken Livingstone has weighed in with his support for the proposals to improve Brixton Town centre this week. Responding to questions on the Liberal Democrat /Conservative Council’s decision to ignore a proposed £5 million investment for the square in Brixton from Val Shawcross, Member of the London Assembly for Lambeth, Ken was “amazed they do not want to take it forward.”
Local campaigners who are fighting for the development will be heartened that their elected Labour representatives at City Hall are doing all they can to support the project. Ken Livingstone also commented “I hope that the good people of Lambeth, come May next year, will elect a council that has confidence in its future and will want to get on and improve Brixton.”
Brixton Area Committee, also strongly backed the project. Its Labour Chair, Toren Smith has heavily criticised the Liberal Democrat’s decision to turn down funding for the project without any good reason.
Toren Smith, Labour Councillor also said:
“I am so pleased that Ken has given his support to the people of Brixton who overwhelmingly want this plan to go ahead. Let’s hope that the Liberal Democrats in the Town Hall will listen to an endorsement from the Mayor who gave us a transformed Trafalgar Square.”
