There was a fantastic victory for allotment owners this week, the latest in a string of humiliating u-turns from the Liberal Democrat / Tory Council in recent weeks.

Allotments next to the Brixton reservoir were under threat from the Council and Thames Water and were due to be sold off. A local action group, Friends of Windmill Allotments, campaigned vigorously against the plans and can now continue to taste the fruits of their labours.

Some have been more skeptical of the Council’s actions, citing the fact that plans for the sale were only scrapped as a result of failed Council action on the Glenbrook school site.

Helen Sharrock, chairwoman of the group commented: “This is a victory for the little man and a really wonderful success.”

Local Labour councilor Steve Reed was also pleased: “This is a victory for community and shows the importance of what can be achieved if we act together.”
