Two-faced Lib Dems play politics with schools

Liberal Democrat Councillors in Lambeth have been caught out playing political games over the future of secondary schools in the borough.

Last week the Lib Dems in control of Lambeth had performed a u-turn by finally setting up a working party to look at the option of building a secondary school on Brixton Hill. Lib Dem Education boss Anthony Bottrall was quoted as saying that no decision over sites between Glenbrook and Brixton Hill has yet been taken.

This directly contradicts statements in recent edition of “Lib Dem Focus”, the notorious ward based Liberal Democrat paper. In that publication Councillor John Pindar, said the Liberals backed the Glenbrook site option and attacked Labour’s demand for the Brixton Hill site to be considered too. After quotes from Cllr Pindar the Focus states, “They [Labour] have argued for millions to be spent buying land in Brixton … but Lib Dem Plans will mean a new school can open much sooner and there is no need to buy extra land for the site.”

So whilst one Liberal Democrat attacks Labour for backing a campaign to build a school on Brixton Hill, their Education boss is forced into setting up a working group to look into that very possibility.

Councillor Sally Prentice, Labour’s Lead spokesperson on Education said:

“Labour believes we should be looking at both Glenbrook and the Brixton Hill sites as options for new schools. If the Liberals had asked for the facts two years ago- when Labour asked them to – we might already have a school being built.”

“The Lib Dems are supposed to be running Lambeth Council but they can’t even agree among themselves what their policy should be.”
