Lambeth Labour lobbies for school cash
Labour opposition councillors this week went to see Schools Minister Stephen Twigg to lobby for massive extra investment in building new schools Lambeth. Opposition councillors Steve Reed, Jackie Meldrum and Donatus Anyanwu visited the Minister at the Department for Education because of concerns the Council has not done enough to make sure Lambeth gets its share of new Government money. Lambeth’s Lib Dem controlled Council has
twice failed to secure “Building Schools for the Future” money
for Lambeth. Last time, they failed to convince the Government that they
would spend the money efficiently. It has been left to opposition Labour
Councillors to put the case for Lambeth’s kids and ensure that this
Autumn’s cash round comes the way of the Borough. Securing funding
in the next wave of the scheme could make millions of pounds available
for building new secondary schools and refurbishing every existing school
in Lambeth. “The Liberal Democrats haven’t done enough to make sure Lambeth gets the millions of pounds we need to rebuild our schools. That is why Labour decided to go straight to the top to put the case for Lambeth’s schoolkids.” “There is a desperate need for more secondary
school places in the Borough. We made a very strong case to the Government.
They seemed pleased that someone had come to speak up for Lambeth and
I hope this will now make the difference in seeing the money come through”
