The campaign for fairer parking enforcement in Lambeth is gathering pace. More than 1000 people have now written to Labour Councillors in Lambeth calling for unfair financial incentives to be removed from the parking contract. The incredible response to Labour’s campaign shows the strength of feeling in the borough about over-zealous ticketing by wardens. Hundreds of residents of Clapham Town, Clapham Common, Ferndale, Brixton Hill and Stockwell wards took the trouble to reply when Labour Councillors wrote to them explaining why there is so much unfair ticketing in the borough. Since August 2003, traffic wardens in Lambeth have been under pressure to hand out 12 tickets for every 8 hours shift because of a parking contract signed by the ruling Lib Dem-Tory Administration. In December 2004, Labour Councillors called a special council meeting to give Lib Dem and Tory Councillors the chance to remedy their mistake and remove the financial incentives. Sadly for car drivers in Lambeth, they chose to endorse the financial incentives.
Cllr Steve Reed, Leader of Lambeth Labour Group, said: “Councillors such as Bernard Gentry in Clapham Town should be aware that his constituents are on to him. They know he voted to retain the financial incentives in the parking contract and they will not forget it.” “For over one thousand people to take the trouble to write to their Councillor really shows how angry people are with this unfair parking regime. Its time for the Lib Dems and Tories to listen to them and scrap the unfair financial incentives.” Visit our parking special by clicking
