Labour helps Council put forward solution to "nightmare" Herne Hill Junction

There has been a desperate need, for a number of years, to solve the problem of serious traffic congestion around the extremely busy Herne hill junction, which is unsafe, causes long delays for commuters and has a serious impact on local businesses and residents.

In 2005, 1,000 local Lambeth residents signed a petition urging the council to improve the junction. However, Liberal Democrats failed to act. Through the efforts of Labour Councillors and local residents, Lambeth Council has developed plans to improve the traffic flow and the safety of pedestrians and cyclists at the highly congested junction, while at the same time regenerating the centre of Herne Hill and improving the entrance of Brockwell Park.

A new slip road between Norwood Road and Dulwich Road will move the Brockwell Park boundary a short distance back from its current position. This scheme, which has a lot of local support, will make improvements to the park entrance, provide upgraded and safer pedestrian access to the park, and, most importantly, make the junction safer.

Labour Cllr Lib Peck, Cabinet Member for Environment and Culture at Lambeth Council, said: "There is an overwhelming consensus in the community that something must be done to improve the Herne Hill junction which is currently, quite frankly, a nightmare for the thousands of people who use it every day, and which is damaging the viability of the whole area…We place the highest value on our parks and green spaces.

That’s why officers have worked hard on a solution that brings desperately overdue traffic improvements, but at the same time strives to minimise the impact on the park, and in fact improves the appearance of the entrance, and pedestrian access”.
