'Drug tourists' who come to Brixton from outside the borough to buy their drugs
could find their face splashed on a prominent poster in the town centre under
an innovative new policy.
Labour Councillors have introduced this policy to deter drug crime and the drug
reputation of Lambeth. The new 'Drug Deterrence Policy' means that anyone convicted
of buying drugs in the area runs the risk of receiving a post-conviction ASBO
and getting their name, photo and the nature of their offence widely publicised.
Leaflets and posters will be placed in prominent areas around the borough to
deter the drugs market. Labour Cllr Mark Bennett, Cabinet Member for Safer Communities
at Lambeth Council, said: "We want to send out an uncompromising message
that drugs won't be tolerated in Lambeth. For too long Brixton has had a reputation
as a place to buy drugs – this administration is saying loud and clear
that it is not acceptable to buy or sell drugs in our borough. If we can change
our reputation we can continue to drive this trade off our streets and make
our streets safer."
Each case will be examined by a group of professionals to prevent the unfair
scrutiny of vulnerable individuals. This policy is just one of a set of measures
to tackle drug crime in the borough.
