A Lambeth project that provides an alternative route for young people at risk
of involvement with gangs has been shortlisted for a prestigious Guardian Public
Service Award.
The project, called the x-it programme, is led by young people and aims to stop
young people who are particularly at risk of getting involved in crime, through
group work, residential courses and leadership programmes. Activities include
young peer mentors school visits, an anti-gang website with advice and online
chat lines, and classes for parents.
Labour Cllr Mark Bennett, cabinet member for safer communities at Lambeth Council,
said: "We're delighted that the X-it programme is getting this sort of
recognition. While only a tiny minority of young people get involved in gang
related crime, this scheme is a powerful opportunity for us to engage those
young people who are most at risk, and all the data indicates the programme
has had a significant impact upon the attitudes and behaviour of participants."
