Safety fears after McDonald’s shooting

Residents welcome Labour's tough response against shootings

Residents have welcomed Labour’s tough response to the recent shooting in Brixton’s McDonald’s restaurant. Coming days after another shooting outside the Fridge nightclub in Brixton, local people want to see a crack-down on gun crime. Labour councillors called a public meeting to demand action just days after the shootings. Over 250 residents attended the meeting, including the parents of one of the teenage victims. The police reported that two suspects have been arrested and, happily, the young man who was shot is recovering in hospital.

Labour is giving strong support to the Police in the fight against crime and the evil drugs trade that fuels street-crime in areas of Lambeth. But there is much to do after four years when woolly-minded Lib Dems made Lambeth go soft on crime. They refused to issue anti-social behaviour orders, refused to screen all young offenders, and refused to invest in positive activities for young people, preferring to leave them hanging around on street corners where too many of them got into trouble.

Labour’s Florence Nosegbe grew up in Brixton and is now one of Lambeth’s youngest councillors. She commented: “Everyone knows the drugs trade lies behind these frightening events. Under the Lib Dems, the council refused to back the police in tackling drug dealers. But Labour takes these issues seriously. We’re declaring war on drug dealers and drug tourists. We’ll name and shame people arrested for drugs on Brixton’s streets. We’re funding a crack new team to serve anti-social behaviour orders on persistent offenders. We’ll give young people more things to do. And we’ll put more police and safety wardens on the streets to smash this vile trade that causes so much misery."
