Council staff will be joined by young offenders to blitz graffiti as part of a programme of activity to mark Graffiti Awareness Week (9-15 October)
The young offenders will join council staff painting out graffiti in Prince’s ward, as part of a community payback scheme designed to show them the damage ‘tagging’ and other vandalism causes to communities. Council staff will also be removing graffiti free of charge from private properties.
Posters will be put up at 250 sites around the borough stressing the message that graffiti is a crime and can have serious consequences for offenders. The posters are headlined ‘Don’t waste your time, graffiti is a crime.’
The graffiti removal activity will take place as part of ‘Operation Freshview’, Lambeth Council’s drive to make environmental improvements and tackle anti-social behaviour in some of the more deprived parts of the borough.
Councillor Lib Peck, Cabinet member for Environment and Culture, said:
“Graffiti is a scourge on communities. Lambeth Council has a dedicated
team that removes graffiti and fly-posting seven days a week all year round,
but Graffiti Awareness Week is important to highlight the environmental damage
it causes. I would urge people to report graffiti to us on 0207 926 9000 or
via email graffiti@lambeth.gov.uk so we can remove it as quickly as possible.”
Graffiti Awareness Week is organised by The Capital Standards network in association
with SWAAG (South West Action Against Graffiti) a group of councils, who along
with the police and other groups, are determined to fight graffiti on all fronts.
