![]() The bang bang bar website announces the change of name following Lambeth Labour's campaign |
Lambeth’s Labour Council has hit out at a business for glorifying gun crime in Brixton. A new bar in central Brixton called “Bang Bang” printed and distributed the flyer to advertise their opening night. The flyer pictured men holding guns and included the words: “would you come to Brixton for a double shot?” Following the recent shootings of two young men in McDonald’s in Brixton, the leaflet has caused widespread offence.
At a time when the people of Brixton have come together to show their opposition to gun crime, the flyer has sparked outrage. Labour councillors have moved swiftly to condemn the advertising campaign.
Councillor Mark Bennett, Labour Cabinet member for community safety, said:
“This is irresponsible and unacceptable. Gun crime is a serious problem for Lambeth, which the police and council and the other Safer Lambeth Partners are working hard to tackle.
“We are not helped by businesses who seek to glorify or trivialise violent crime. They insult both residents and also the memories of all those in our borough who have been affected by the promotion of the drug and gang culture.
“The owners should rename the bar, withdraw their idiotic flyer and make a donation to anti-gun initiatives by way of apology.”
STOP PRESS: Following Labour’s campaign,
the bar on Atlantic Road, Brixton, has agreed to withdraw the leaflet and rename
the bar.
