Six Lambeth councillors are inviting local school students to decide who should be ”evicted” from a new website, with the last remaining councillor dubbed the ”winner.”
“I’m a Councillor-get me out of here” is a fun exercise with a real and practical purpose. It aims to make councils more relevant and useful to young people and to encourage the pupils to take a more active part in local democracy.
The project will run from October 9-20 , climaxing against the backdrop of Local Democracy Week which is scheduled for October 16-20. It starts when councillors post their manifestos on www.bigvote.org.uk
The councillors answer young people’s questions and talk to them on line during pre-booked live chats. The participants practice their democratic power by voting to keep in the councillor from whom they would like to hear more.
The councillor with the lowest votes is evicted, with the last remaining councillor the ”winner.” This is Lambeth’s first involvement in this initiative. This year, 14 and 15 year old pupil s from Lilian Baylis school are taking part, with access codes to the secure website and voting rights.
The event is backed by teaching packs on local government, debates, quizzes and access cards. It contributes to the Key stage 3 and 4 citizenship curriculum.
“This initiative will enable councillors to actively engage with young people and to learn more about their needs and concerns, “ said Councillor Sally Prentice, Lambeth Labour cabinet member for Children and Young People.
“It will give the students an opportunity to voice their opinions on
local and national issues in a constructive way, “she declared.
