Labour has welcomed a bar owner’s decision to change the name of the Bang Bang bar, after it created outrage for trivialising gun violence.

The club was visited by council officers, police, and a representative of Lambeth Business Against Crime on Friday after the bar had put out promotional material depicting a young man with a gun.

Following a discussion, the owner agreed to change the name of the club postpone the launch night until the name had been changed, and to withdraw any promotional material.

Councillor Mark Bennett, Labour Cabinet member for community safety, said: “I welcome the fact that this licensee has agreed to change the name of this bar.

“The name and the promotional material both trivialised a very serious issue, not to mention the fact that it was insulting to all those in this borough who have been affected by the gun problem.

“At a time when we are working to build a new reputation for Lambeth, this publicity was really unhelpful and I am glad that we have been able to reach agreement over this.
