New crime figures show crime in Lambeth is falling faster than all other south London boroughs and has seen the 3rd biggest fall in London. Lambeth has seen a 12 per cent fall in crime in the last year, with 5333 fewer crimes. Violence against person is down 15 per cent, criminal damage is down 9.2 per cent and violence against person was down 14 per cent.

Lambeth’s success was praised today by Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone. The Mayor urged the police and local community to work closely together to keep crime falling in Lambeth.

Ken Livingstone said,

"The fact that Lambeth has seen the 3rd biggest fall in crime really shows what can be achieved by a combination of increased numbers of police officers on the streets and improving relationship between the police and local communities in Lambeth.

‘The 12 per cent fall in crime in Lambeth is a real achievement and I am determined that Lambeth will continue to see similar falls in crime in the future. At local level there are some really startling results. In Brixton Hill violence against the person is down 15 per cent and burglary in Streatham Hill has been cut by 17.4 per cent.

High profile violent incidents which have gained widespread media attention in Lambeth should not overshadow the real improvements that are being made by the police, Lambeth council and local communities.

‘In January this year I accelerated plans to put a local police team in every area in London by April 2006 rather than 2008. Thanks to extra funding, Lambeth now has 21 local police teams, a dedicated team in every neighbourhood, 18 months ahead of schedule. Now we are really seeing the benefits of Safer Neighbourhood police teams with these new figures.

‘This is real progress but we must not be complacent. Now that Safer Neighbourhood police teams are in place across Lambeth, I urge the police and community to redouble their efforts to keep crime falling and make our streets safer."
