Labour plans to modernise Brixton Square

Plans to revamp and rejuvenate Brixton central square are gathering pace and an exciting new exhibition, showcasing the proposals is taken place at Brixton Library.

Brixton, the heart of Lambeth, is to benefit from a regeneration package to modernise the area’s central square. Residents and local businesses have been closely involved with the council, Transport for London and Design for London in developing these plans, and the fruits of their collaboration will be on view at the two-week display.

Exhibits will include a model of the site proposals and photographs of what the new modernised square will look like. Council officers will also be on hand, at various times during the exhibition, to answer questions about the new development.

Plans to modernise the square centre on a design to unite the spaces of Tate Garden and Windrush Square, encouraging a better interaction with St. Matthew’s Peace Gardens and the rest of the Town Centre. There will be improved landscaping, new surfacing, an innovative water feature, and new distinctive street 'furniture' including benches and lights.

The new design, by linking the different areas together, will address concerns about community safety and anti social behaviour. In general, there will be more space for pedestrians, and by changing the layout of trees, there will be better CCTV coverage and improved sightlines through the new space.

Councillor Paul McGlone, cabinet member for regeneration said: "Brixton is a thriving cultural hub with a bustling nightlife, a burgeoning local economy and many popular landmarks. The regeneration and redevelopment of the area’s central square can only contribute to its vibrancy by making it a cultural beacon for locals and tourists alike.

"I would encourage everybody who either lives, works, or visits the area, to drop in to the exhibition to see our vision for Brixton central square."

The two week exhibition takes place at Brixton Library, Brixton Oval SW2 1JQ from May 14 to 25th. For more information contact Future Lambeth on 0800 052 6336, or email.
