For health and safety reasons the centre will be closed for approximately three months from April 1 while the work is carried out, although school organised swimming classes will continue.
The council will be working with its new partner Greenwich Leisure Ltd on the
improvements. Greenwich Leisure is recognised as an industry leader, managing
more than 50 public leisure centres within the M25, and working partnership
with a number of London local authorities, including Hammersmith and Fulham,
Newham, Camden and Ealing.
Cllr Lib Peck, Cabinet member for environment and culture, said: “This
work signals our commitment to making a step change in the standard of Lambeth’s
sports facilities, and we believe it will turn Brixton Rec into the premier
sports centre for young people in London. Brixton Rec is over 20 years old and
anyone who has visited it will know that it is in desperate need of modernisation.
With the Olympics on the horizon we want to give Lambeth residents the sports
facilities they deserve and this investment will help to do that.
“Because of the extensive nature of the work, it will be necessary to
close Brixton Rec for approximately three months. I ask that users bear with
us while this work takes place, but I am sure people will agree that the temporary
closure is a price well worth paying for the improvements.
“Greenwich Leisure has a proven track record of managing and improving
leisure centres, and I am delighted that we will be working with them to make
major improvements to our sports facilities. I’m determined that more
people should start using our leisure centres, and that people’s experience
of using our leisure facilities should be better, and Greenwich Leisure will
help deliver those aims.
