Labour ends Lib Dem sell-off
In his first act as Lambeth’s new Housing chief John Kazantzis has ended the sell-off of council owned street properties started by his Lib Dem predecessors. Over the period of their four years in power the Liberal Democrats sold off dozens of family sized properties owned by the council. The former Lib Dem councillor in charge of housing even bid for one at auction himself. Their money raising scam to cover for waste in other areas denied families most in need from getting a reasonable sized home. Labour gave a clear commitment in their manifesto to “End the Lib Dem sell off of family-sized council homes to wealthy private investors.” Labour believes that family sized properties are an asset that the council should be using to help local families who are struggling to find a decent home. Councillor Kazantzis is determined to deliver on Labour’s promises during the election campaign. Tenants leaders across the borough had been campaigning against the Lib Dems policy as a waste of valuable resources. Councillor Kazantzis has instructed officers that no more family sized street properties are to be sold off as long as Labour is in charge of the council: Councillor Kazantzis, Lambeth Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, said: "This new policy shows the clear difference that having a Labour Council in Lambeth can make. We are putting the people of Lambeth first by ending the Lib Dem sell-off. For four years they sold off valuable assets to cover for their waste and incompetence in running the council.” “I have told council officers that this
must end now. Labour will not sell-off large family sized homes while
there are so many families living in unacceptable conditions in overcrowded
small houses and flats .”
