Lambeth Labour gets in gear for fairer parking

Councillor Nigel Haselden, Deputy Cabinet member for Parking

In the same week when the Labour Government announced tough new measures to overhaul parking enforcement, Lambeth’s Labour Council is already ahead of the game. The Government's initiative is in response to the way councils such the former Lib Dem / Tory regime in Lambeth which abused parking to extort money off innocent motorists.
Lambeth’s newly elected Labour town hall bosses started the process of renegotiating the borough’s parking contract with a private company on the day after the local elections in May.
Labour promised the electorate that it would remove the unfair financial incentives in the parking contract that had been added by the Liberal Democrats and Tories. The incentives forced parking wardens to hand out 12 tickets for every 8 hours shift irrespective of how many illegal cars they encountered.
Labour Ministers announced plans this Tuesday for new guidelines for local authorities that make clear that parking enforcement powers are supposed to keep the traffic flowing and not to raise money.

Councillor Nigel Haselden, Labour’s Deputy Cabinet Member for Parking and Transport, said:

“Lambeth Labour is currently in the process of delivering on our promise to bring fair parking enforcement back to Lambeth.”

The Lib Dems and Tories always used parking as a cash cow, but the government is now stepping in to stop local authorities across the country from doing this. Luckily, in Lambeth we are already ahead of the game. I look forward to announcing the renegotiated contract shortly.”
