It
is with sad regret that we announce that Liz Atkinson, former Mayor and ward
councillor, died on Thursday 24 January.
Cllr Atkinson was elected to represent Vassall Ward on Lambeth Council in 2002. During her time as a Councillor she took a particular interest in health and education policy. In addition, she was a school governor at St. Mark’s school and the council's representative at King's Hospital.
She also served as the borough's Mayor last year, and focused on enabling young and older people to share fully in the life of the borough. Particular charities she supported included The South London Family Centre and The Hampton Project.
Council leader Steve Reed said: "It is a huge sadness that Liz Atkinson passed away during the week. Liz was a great councillor who had won respect and admiration from her constituents and from people across the borough for her hard work and dedication.
"She was always thoughtful, always reliable both as a colleague and in her role as Mayor of Lambeth last year.
"Liz was extremely modest and unassuming, privately and in front of audiences. But it was quite clear that people warmed to her for that because she came across as she truly was - compassionate, caring and unspun. Liz's good humour, kindness, intelligence and commitment to this part of south London are familiar to all of us who knew her. We will feel her loss keenly and the Borough will be the poorer for her passing.
"The thoughts of everyone at the Council are with Liz's family at this
difficult time"
