![]() Cabinet Minister David Miliband - helping to launch the Lambeth Labour Manifesto |
Labour Councillors in Lambeth have launched their manifesto for the 2006 local elections with the help of Cabinet Minister, David Miliband. Labour’s manifesto, entitled “We’re on your side”, makes tackling crime and anti-social behaviour Labour’s top priority should they win back control of the council in May.
Labour policies to tackle crime include putting a permanent team of uniformed officers led by a sergeant in every ward, naming and shaming drug tourists and kerb crawlers and using tough new Government powers to tackle anti-social behaviour.
Labour will also improve facilities for young people so they have more positive things to do
The manifesto was written after extensive consultation with the public, party members and service users. The document was distributed among party members at the Lambeth Labour Borough conference and is now being distributed to thousands of addresses across the borough.
Lambeth Labour have also pledged to:
• Keep council tax kept down in line with
incomes
• Introduce a council-wide war on waste and a crackdown on fraud
• Provide new investment to fix broken pavements and repair road
surfaces
• Develop faster removal of graffiti and dumped rubbish and more
ways for you to report problems – including by text messages
• Provide new opportunities to help people recycle more –
including items currently banned like plastic food containers, old clothes,
more garden and organic waste
• Scrap the unfair Lib Dem and Tory profit incentives that lead
to overzealous ticketing
• Open two new secondary schools, work towards building a third,
and expand other popular schools
• Give young people more to do with new youth and sports facilities
across Lambeth
• Introduce a ‘gold service’ repairs hotline for over-65s
offering priority advice or support at home when things go wrong
• Support local shops and stop Lib Dem plans to sell them off or
close them down
• Partner local businesses to create new jobs
Cllr Steve Reed, Leader of Lambeth Labour Group said:
"Our proposals are a positive agenda for change. Labour's top priority is to make Lambeth safer. But we will also root out the waste and fraud that the Liberals have allowed to flourish and we'll reinvest that money to improve services for everyone.
"That's how we can guarantee better schools,
cleaner streets, a greener environment, more support for young and old,
and a fairer council tax.”
