![]() Lambeth worst council under Lib Dem and Tories |
Lambeth was the worst Council in Britain under Liberal Democrat and Conservative rule. We always knew it, but now it’s official. The Audit Commission has published a report based on an assessment carried out in March last year when the Liberals and Tories were still in charge. It shows Lambeth falling back from two stars to just one – the only Council in London to get such a low score
But the report also shows the Council is now “improving well” with Labour. While services still need to get much better, the Council has turned the corner after four years of Lib Dem and Tory failure.
Shattered Lib Dems are in disarray over the result. Lambeth’s Lib Dem leader Ashley Lumsden admitted the results taken from when he was in charge showed the Council was the “worst in London”. Tory John Whelan joined in with an admission that services had “fallen far behind”.
Labour’s Steve Reed was elected Leader of the Council last May. He commented:
“This report is the final, damning verdict of four years of Lib Dem and
Tory failure. But it shows the Council is now getting better with Labour, and
I take responsibility for driving that improvement harder and faster over the
coming years.”
