Liberal Democrats in Lambeth oppose new money for better homes

Lambeth’s Liberal Democrats are trying to block over £200 million new money for better council homes. After four years of Tory and Lib Dem rule in the borough, up to 10,000 homes are officially deemed to be sub-standard. People living in them are forced to live with rotten windows, damp walls, and have no central heating through the cold winter months.

Lambeth's newly elected Labour council has put in a bid for £200 million Government money that promises to put things right and make every home safe, warm and dry * a first for Lambeth. Labour asked the Lib Dems for cross-party support for the plans * but there was disbelief when the Lib Dem leader announced his party would campaign AGAINST the new money. Lambeth's Lib Dems spent four years in coalition with the right-wing Conservatives and object to money being spent on people living on housing estates.

Labour’s proposing to set up an improved management structure – called an ‘Arms Length Management Organisation’ (or ALMO) – to make sure the money’s spent properly under stronger tenant control. After the Liberal Democrats lost millions of pounds in fraud, Labour believes housing management must be sorted out so the new money is invested where it should be spent – on improving homes for Lambeth’s tenants.
