Labour freezes councillor allowances

Labour leader of Lambeth Council
Labour leader of Lambeth Council "It’s time for residents to see if they’re getting value for money for their councillors"

Labour have frozen councillors’ pay despite Liberal Democrat demands for their own allowances to be hiked up immediately. Labour Councillors have commissioned a review of councillors community engagement role in order to come to an informed decision on how much they should be paid. This will include consideration of exactly what levels of work the public can expect from their councillors.

While Liberal Democrat councillors were pushing for their allowances to be hiked up immediately, the Conservatives indicated that they would wait to see what the Labour Administration proposed before passing comment. The Lib Dems made false claims in public about Labour’s intentions while hypocritically making private demands that their councillors should get extra cash.

Labour is proposing that members of the public should be able to view a regular online report from their councillors to see how hard they are working. The review will report at the end of the summer.

Councillor Steve Reed, Labour Leader of Lambeth Council, said:

“When they were in charge at the town hall, the Lib Dems were wrong to put up councillors’ pay without showing they’d earned it. It’s time for residents to see if they’re getting value for money for their councillors. People elect us to work hard for them. Now they will be able to see if we’re coming up to scratch – and earning a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work.
