Labour saves community site
Local people are flocking to the old Lilian Baylis School site in Kennington, which has been transformed into a much needed centre for community and sports activities. Lib Dem councillors announced plans to sell off the site for private development before May's council elections. But those plans have now been stopped thanks to Labour's landslide election victory. Local Labour councillor Stephen Morgan said: "One of Labour's first decisions was to stop this sell off. Labour believes in the value of local sports facilities - unlike the Lib Dems who wanted to flog off everything to pay for the fraud and waste they'd allowed to run riot at the town hall." Labour is now drawing up long-term plans that will preserve facilities for the community and put local people in charge of the site's future. Delighted local residents have given strong backing to Labour's bid to save the site. But there was outrage when senior Lib Dem councillors showed how little they'd learnt since their election defeat by repeating demands for the site to be sold off. There were gasps of disbelief as Lib Dem Roger Geiss strutted to the front of a public meeting to demand that the site be put back on the auction list. Labour councillors are standing four-square
with residents who want the site saved for local people. Options for the
future of the site will be presented to the public within weeks and are
expected to cover health, sport, education and other community uses.
