![]() Labour have commisioned a feasibility study for a third secondary school in Brixton |
Labour Councillors have delivered on another of their manifesto pledges by commissioning a feasibility study for a third Secondary School in Brixton.
A Project Board has been set up involving councillors, senior officers, representatives of Lambeth head teachers and governors and nominees of the parents' groups Secondary Schools Campaign In Lambeth (SSCIL) and Nelson Mandela Foundation (NMF). At its first meeting, the Board agreed governance arrangements and decided on the scope for the study, as well as associated timescales, tendering and management procedures.
The previous right-wing Liberal Democrat and Tory regime in Lambeth refused to carry out a feasibility study because they did not want to invest money in a new school in Brixton.
It is hoped that the study will be completed within the next three to four months
Sally Prentice, Labour’s Cabinet member for Children and Young People’s Services said:
"Labour Councillors are taking seriously the parents' campaign for a new school in central Brixton. We are commissioning an external review of three sites so the Council will know what it is likely to cost to purchase land for a new school.
“The project is strongly supported by Keith
Hill MP and we have recently had a meeting with a potential sponsor who is very
interested in the project."
