Lambeth Council is partnering with major players in the hair, beauty and fashion industry to deliver a high profile showcase for both businesses and consumers on 5 November, 2006 at Lambeth Town Hall and in surrounding venues.
Encouraged by the billion pound value of the industry and its power to regenerate the Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) community in Lambeth, partners Adornment, Hype Coiffure, GLE oneLondon, Salon Strategies and the Ethnic Beauty & Hair Association, have designed a programme which includes exhibitors, fashion and hair shows, competitions, workshops and demonstrations.
The event will be preceded by an October programme offering apprenticeships in leading salons, business workshops and a fashion academy for budding stylists, models and make-up artists. The deliberate focus on young people and businesses will ensure that new talent is given a chance and businesses are supported to network and up-skill in critical areas.
Cllr Paul McGlone, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Enterprise at Lambeth
Council, welcomed the initiaitve. ‘Lambeth is such an inspiring place,
we have genuine interest across London, the UK and even internationally in our
hair fashion and beauty businesses, “ he pointed out.
“I am really keen that we provide as much support as possible to existing
businesses as well to potential entrepreneurs to ensure Lambeth is at the heart
of the hair fashion and beauty industry in London.’
Calvin Rattray, Managing Director of Hype Coiffure , the multi award winning
salon chain is fully behind the initiative: He said “What I love about
this event is that there is a drive to target young people, giving them an opportunity
to see inside the industry and gain hands-on experience. Brixton has so much
talent! We have to harness it so that it we keep innovating and setting trends”.
Margot Rodway-Brown, Director of Adornment, agrees that Lambeth is a hotbed
of influences which impact on the wider hair, beauty and fashion industry.
“Just look at the way African-inspired hairstyling techniques and textiles
have impacted on mainstream style and fashion. We need to showcase the innovators,
strengthen businesses and ensure that they are platformed to the public”,
she declared.
