Lib Dems are trying to force families into over-crowded homes – despite the damage that would do to children. The latest insane proposals from London’s looniest Lib Dems have outraged hard-working families struggling to bring up children responsibly. Lib Dem councillor Jeremy Clyne, who lives in a millionaire mansion overlooking leafy Tooting Common, attempted to halt improvements to a family-sized home. He ranted that it was wrong to give big homes to large families because the children would grow up and move away at some point – implying that families should be forced into cramped accommodation instead.
While the Lib Dems were in charge of Lambeth Council until their election defeat in 2006, they introduced a policy of selling off family-sized council homes, refused to meet targets for building affordable housing, and tried to cover up for one of their own senior councillors who was later convicted in court of public theft in a housing fraud scandal. Back in opposition they have learnt few lessons, and have publicly opposed Labour’s plans for the biggest-ever investment in better council housing across Lambeth.
Labour councillor Kirsty McHugh said: “local people are sick and tired
of these Lib Dems who sit in their luxurious homes plotting and scheming how
to prevent improvements to the homes of society’s poorest people. Children
deserve space to grow up in, where they can play and do their homework. Why
do the Lib Dems think poorer children should be forced into overcrowded flats?
These Lib Dems are as heartless as they are incompetent.”
