Lambeth Liberal Democrats play politics with peoples’ lives - Labour invests in vulnerable people

Following the extraordinary Council meeting that took place on Thursday 24 April, Cllr Lorna Campbell, Cabinet Member for Health and Care Services, said:

“Local Liberal Democrats have exposed themselves as hypocrites with their behaviour at tonight’s meeting by playing politics with vulnerable people.

“The Lib Dems closed the Kennington Day Centre; left care for sick and elderly people underfunded and brought the council to the brink of bankruptcy despite a multi-million pound windfall that they refused to spend on older people’s services. Their claims to care for older people are a sham.

“Labour has put £2m a year extra in services for older and disabled people since we won control of the council in 2006. But while we saved the council from financial collapse, that meant increasing some charges so the most vulnerable could get the support they need. Now the finances are looking better, we will have a chance to review the situation in July after a full consultation with local people and service users. It’s the Lib Dems who got us into this mess in the first place, and now they’re trying to play their two-faced politics with the people whose services they left underfunded.

Cllr Alex McKenna, the council’s Chief Whip, said:
“The Mayor has admitted she has made a mistake and should never have called this meeting. Now we can get on with our consultation and take a decision on these important issues when everyone’s had a chance to look at all the facts.”
