Val Shawcross welcomes transport funding for Lambeth & Southwark
Val Shawcross, London Assembly Member for Lambeth & Southwark, today welcomed the news that Transport for London has allocated large sums to both Lambeth & Southwark Councils for local transport improvements. Today's announcement of the funding allocated to boroughs revealed that Southwark will receive £3.9m and Lambeth £4.0m in 2005/06 to spend on new 20mph zones, cycle network improvement, safer routes to schools, repairs to main roads and other infrastructure improvements Val Shawcross AM said "These grants will make a huge difference on the streets of Lambeth and Southwark. The money will be used to deliver many small and medium sized transport and road safety projects that residents are crying out for." In addition, £1.85m has been allocated to SELTRANS - a cross-borough partnership of South-East London Councils. Of this, £730k has been earmarked for improvements to station access. Val said "A great many of the overground stations in Lambeth and Southwark are in desperate need of improvements so this money is very welcome. I'm particularly pleased that our campaign for Streatham Common Station has paid off and at long last the Eardly Road entrance will be reopening." Val also welcomed the overall increase in
money allocated to London boroughs - up from £147m last year to
£155m this year - and the promise of similar levels of funding for
the next 5 years. Click here
