Val Shawcross slams Streatham Station 'slum'
Valerie Shawcross, London Assembly Member for Lambeth and Southwark has visited Streatham station today to complain bitterly about the poor state of repair of the building. Fed up with the ‘water feature’ created by the leaking roof in heavy rain, frustrated passengers took their concerns to Val. After making complaints she arranged to visit the station and meet with Southern Railways staff to tackle the problem. ‘As regular station users will know, there is a huge hole in the station ceiling which leaks water every time it rains. Staff putting buckets at the top of the stairwell is obviously not an acceptable state of affairs. ‘ Val explained. ‘In addition the station is somewhat scruffy and dingy – a general grotspot. Given the high fares passengers pay currently, it was time to get things sorted out’. Val welcomed the news that repairs and refurbishment are firmly on the agenda for Streatham. ‘I was delighted to hear that Network Rail, who are responsible for the structure of the station building, have now agreed that the ceiling needs fixing and will be taking action shortly,’ Val said In addition, Southern will be spending £20k on revamping the ticket office and bright anti-vandal lights are to be fitted in the stairwells as a deterrent to potential troublemakers. The station will also be repainted and spruced up and of course already benefits from a monitored CCTV system. ‘I’m reassured that Southern
are taking passengers’ concerns seriously and I hope people will
notice an improvement. Streatham should become a lighter, brighter station.’
