Val Shawcross the Labour Assembly member for Lambeth
and Southwark has welcomed today's announcement of funding to move plans
for the London (Cross River) Tram project forward to the next stage.
The Labour Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, has today confirmed that
his transport agency will include a number of schemes that will benefit
local businesses and ordinary people in a £2.9billion capital programme.
Projects announced today that will directly affect local people in Lambeth
and Southwark include the East London Line Extension to Croydon and Crystal
palace and funding to equip the whole bus fleet with cctv. In addition
money has been made available to install cctv on trains and stations on
Southern, South East and Thameslink routes.
Commenting – Valerie Shawcross AM – said, “This is great
news South London has been the poor relation in terms of transport for
too long. Ken is taking the difficult decisions that have been put off
for far too long.”
“I’m delighted that planning for the London Tram project can
now move forward. The tram project would make it easier for local people
to access jobs and leisure opportunities in central London and will boost
house prices.”
“Obviously this is a long term project. You don’t build a
new infrastructure overnight especially after so many years of underinvestment.
There are still issues to be resolved and I will be working with the Mayor
to try to minimise disruption to local people.”
