South London Line Saved
Valerie Shawcross, London Assembly Member for Lambeth and Southwark has expressed her relief that the South London Line rail service through her constituency to Victoria is to be retained by Network Rail. Following lobbying from Val, Network Rail have dropped plans to re-route the London Bridge to Victoria via Denmark Hill ‘loop’ line to Clapham Junction, which would have resulted in a complete loss of services to Victoria from Clapham High Street and Wandsworth Road stations, and reduced direct services to Victoria from Denmark Hill station from four trains an hour to two. ‘I received a great many representations from Lambeth commuters about this’ Val commented ‘I am really relieved that that Network Rail have realised the depth of passengers’ concerns about the future of this service. Thousands of people depend on the South London Line to get to work in central London and to travel to Kings College Hospital and the Maudsley Hospital in Denmark Hill. ‘ She continued ‘Network Rail have promised to maintain contact with me in the future about any other routes they are placing under review. I am intending to be vigilant in protecting our vital rail services in South London’.
