Demand for more neighbourhood policing
Val Shawcross called on Mayor Ken Livingstone to increase the number of Neighbourhood Policing Schemes in Lambeth and Southwark. The Labour Assembly Member for Lambeth and Southwark said that neighbourhood policing already introduced on the Aylesbury Estate, Myatt’s Field Estate, Rotherhithe & Surrey Docks; Loughborough Junction area; Camberwell Green and Clapham Town were proving very popular. Speaking at the monthly ‘Mayor’s Question Time’ at City Hall, Val Shawcross said “Those communities not in the first tranche are now demanding they be included in the next and I urge you Mr Mayor to use your influence within the Metropolitan Police Authority to extend these neighbourhood schemes as soon as possible.” Val has worked hard with Mayor Ken Livingstone to get neighbourhood policing teams and extra police in Lambeth and Southwark and the first indications show that crime has gone down more in these areas than elsewhere. Val added "These safer neighbourhood teams are very popular and are having a really positive effect where they’ve been introduced. They are responsive to local needs and priorities. Teams are based in the community in places like schools, hospitals and supermarkets and work with the community in driving down crime and disorder” The Mayor agreed with Val and said “I
want Safer Neighbourhood Teams rolled out across London by 2008 and, subject
to funding, with at least a further 5 teams in every borough as early
as possible next year”. |
